Cory Patton of First Student Group, San Diego took home the Championship School Bus Safety Roadeo trophy by receiving the top score in 9 specialized defensive driving events. Patton also received the highest
score on the written exam and only one of four contestants who answered correctly on the bonus question.  (click here to read and review the Bonus Question and Answer). 

The State Championship School Bus Safety Roadeo Competition was held on Sunday, May 25th at the Galt Market Place in the city of Galt.  The championship roadeo consisted of forty-three regular education competitors and six special
needs contestants, all contestants were trophy winners at either the southern or northern competition previously held in late April and early May.  California has awarded the top prize to the State Champion for regular education and one for
special needs transportation.

The top three places in regular education were awarded to Cory Patton (pictured left) from First Student of San Diego, representing Snowline Joint USD was Doug Smith (center) taking home the 2^nd Place trophy; 3^rd Place was Brent Carman (right), Morgan Hill Unified School District.  For a list of all the contestants, click 2008 State Championship Contestants.  Patton will represent California at the National/International School Bus Safety
Competition in Canada in mid-July 2008.

Les Bouton and his bus attendant Janice Busic of First Student, Fresno were awarded the Championship award for Special Needs. Bouton will compete at the national competition representing

California in early 2009.

Marysville Jt. Unified School District won the Team Trophy with team members Danny Riedel, Michelle Derryberry and Shannon Wise. Only 4 points seperated the team of Marysville Jt. USD and the southern team from San Diego Unified School District.

The afternoon was reserved for the Annual BBQ Awards Ceremony allowing President Greg Straw to give his appreciation to the Roadeo contestants and judges. The roadeo committee under the direction on Angelica Vargas-Meier
includes; Janet Hutchison, Gary Dodson, Kevin Wedemeyer, Sergio Neves, Debbie Barker, John Cain, Tony Peregrina, Debbie Hicks and Kevin Sellstrom.  Nikki Hughes is the Past Chair who also provided resources for the successful roadeo.

Student Transportation of America donated the BBQs for the Annual BBQ Giveway (click Two BBQ Winners for photo) and assisted in serving the traditonal Tri-Tip luncheon served to all contestants, judges and attendees. The BBQ was
delicious and was enjoyed by over 200 in attendance for the award ceremony.

John Green and his staff from the Office of School Transportation did a fine job assisting with the roadeo.  All in all, the roadeo ran very smoothly, with the competition
concluding by early afternoon.
