The data for these reports were gathered from the Fatality
Analysis Reporting System (FARS) a database of all fatal motor vehicle
crashes that occur in the United States. The FARS database is maintained by
the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a division of
the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT). FARS is the only
national database of motor vehicle crashes that occur in the United States.
The injuries included in these reports are only those that occurred in
crashes where at least one person was killed. Injuries in non-fatal crashes
are not reported in the Fatality Analysis Reporting System.
The data in these reports is for school-aged children during normal school
transportation hours in passenger motor vehicles, as pedestrians and in
school buses.
